Krabi is a small city with a full time population of only eighteen thousand. An inland city in Thailand, the area has long been a draw for tourists looking to experience a more authentic aspect of Thailand and is a beautiful and relaxing place to spend time in on your tour of the country. In Krabi luxury hotels are now springing up as the area becomes more popular with travellers and you can be sure to find the perfect place for you.
Flanked by mountains and verdant land, Krabi has historically been a destination for backpackers and those looking to travel off the beaten track. In recent years, however, with the opening of its own airport, the area is becoming increasingly popular although is still not as highly visited as other Thailand resorts, making it the perfect place to truly appreciate Thailand's unique beauty.
Surrounded by ragged coastline and craggy cliffs, the area offers an almost unspoiled example of that which attracts visitors to the area. Gorgeous scenery and the Thai culture combine to create an unadulterated paradise and you will enjoy every minute of your stay here.
For those looking to explore the natural beauty of the land you will not be disappointed as there are a number of supervised activities you can take part in as a beginner. The limestone cliffs offer the perfect landscape for rock climbers and this activity has become a must do for many of the city's visitors. Safety and beginners courses are available for the adventurous whilst more advanced trails are available for those with experience.
For those less active but nonetheless wanting to experience the true beauty of the area why not climb under the cliffs instead of up them? A complex network of hidden caverns and caves exists all along the shoreline in Krabi and offers a unique experience to those who endeavor to investigate them. Guided tours are available of these caverns and Tham Phi is a sight which, once seen, can never be forgotten. This massive cave is filled with grottos and scratched artwork as well as a fossilized tiger paw print which has led to its alternative name of Tiger Cave, or Wat Tham Sua.
The cave is still used as an active temple and the Wat Tham Sua monks live and worship here and use the area as a meditation technique. Entry is free, although a donation is suggested and from here you can choose to climb the 1272 steps to the top of the cliff to see the 'footprint of Buddha'. Whilst it takes a lot of work to reach the top, the view from the cliffs over the Andaman Sea is truly spectacular and well worth it for those who are able to make the climb.
For those seeking a more relaxing time, why not spend your afternoons lazing on the fabulous beaches and paddling in the crystal clear waters. An abundance of bars and restaurants means you will not have any trouble finding a comfortable position from which to watch the world pass by and, if you are feeling up to it, you can take a trek through the markets of the area for a bargain.
Because Krabi is relatively undeveloped compared to many of the resorts in Thailand, prices here are much cheaper than elsewhere in the country - especially when it comes to food and drink. Take advantage of this distinction and indulge in authentic, traditional, local cuisine as much as possible whilst you are there. Be mindful, however, that much of the offerings are quite spicy so be ready to drink a lot of water - or local beer.
Hotels in the area also reflect this and you will find that prices in the hotel bars and restaurants are also very reasonable. Due to its growing popularity, small boutique hotels are springing up and large Krabi luxury hotels are opening and being developed all the time. Services range widely in the area but standard amenities available include en suites and the much needed air conditioning. Many properties offer private villas or rooms with balconies, mini-bars, room service and satellite television, with most of the larger Krabi luxury hotels also offering leisure complexes complete with spa facilities.
Get in whilst the secret is still relatively unspoiled and enjoy a true taste of all of the things that make Thailand such a popular destination; natural beauty, amazing cuisine and unparalleled hospitality.
